Joshua's mailbag: Christmas Calamity

"Comfort ye my people." - Handel's Messiah.

"And there were in same country, shepherds keeping watch over their flocks by night and lo, an angel of the LORD came upon them, and the glory of the LORD shone round about them. They were so afraid. And the angel said to them: "Fear not! For behold, I bring you tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David, a savior which is Christ the Lord and this will be a sign unto you. You shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel, a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying: "Glory to God in the highest! And on earth, peace and goodwill towards men." - Luke 2:4-14

"If we don't tell the real story of Christmas.... WHO WILL!?" - Charles Schulz to the CBS writers who believed no one would want to want Linus recite Luke 2. CBS believed they had a flop with "A Charlie Brown Christmas."

Another letter, this time from Balthazar...

Hey Josh!

Sorry I haven't written you sooner but we've been busy with trying to find the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. Man I am tired. Caspar and Melchior are have also been called upon to find this babe as well but I have no way of contacting them. We've been following this really awesome star! It's brighter than bright! Speaking of which, I heard this Charlie Brown Christmas special nearly didn't happen because of the executives. This little guy named Linus told the truth about Christmas and I take it some people thought it was a fake? What about all these "I can't breathe" and "No Justice... No Peace" things. Enlighten us please.

In response:

Balthazar,

Yeah dude, they almost canceled "A Charlie Brown Christmas" because of some technicalities that the network executives DID NOT like.

1. They didn't like the fact they were using child actors without experience over adult actors. Charles Schulz was the creator and driving force behind this so naturally he had the final word in everything.

2. Network executives said: "Who's going to want to sit and listen to Linus do that bible verse?" Schulz in fact fired back with that quote I put. That was the truth.

Why was it necessary however:

1. That reading of Luke is extremely essential to the telling of the Christmas story.

2. In the end, nearly 61% of the American households tuned into the Charlie Brown special, beating expectations by an unbelievable margin.

Look man, Christmas is a huge deal to us Christians and it is one of the most important holidays in the history of humankind. People need to drop what they are doing to cause trouble and make peace with his or her fellow friend.

Today's world has a major problem. We see the "I can't breathe" or "Justice for Michael Brown" shirts and posters and yet this is supposed to be a time of peace, great joy, and wonder. A reading from Luke 2 would fix that real fast. I just wish these people would get off their high horse and celebrate the reason for the season. Balthazar, Michael Brown was stealing stuff from a store and everyone's acting like that's okay. A cop got shot at Mondawmin Mall and many people are praising it as justice!

What kind of a world do we live in nowadays. This world needs more Jesus in the world and it seems more and more that the politicians are bowing to pressure to take him out. More and more nativity scenes are being replaced or removed all together. We've taken prayer out of school and vice versa.

It's a sad world we live in and it's only getting worse.

Thanks for writing.
~ Joshua
